King George's Hall, Blackburn
Wagner - Overture to Tannhäuser
Walton - Cello Concerto
Mozart - Marriage of Figaro, Overture
Beethoven - Symphony No.3
Laura van der Heijden, cello
This gala concert commemorates 100 years of Blackburn’s beautiful, Grade II listed building and the wonderful performances it has hosted, including its links with the Hallé. The Hall was officially opened in October 1921 with an impressive concert performed by the Hallé, featuring choral works by Elgar and Wagner’s passionate Tannhäuser Overture. That same overture opens this centenary concert under the direction of Gemma New. She will be joined by Laura van der Heijden for a performance of Walton’s elegiac Cello Concerto, the same work that led her to win the 2012 BBC Young Musician of the Year Competition. Mozart’s comical Marriage of Figaro Overture and Beethoven’s mighty ‘Eroica’ Symphony draw this celebration to a victorious close.
