Jonathan Bloxham

Sergio Castelló López, clarinet

Jonathan Bloxham joins the Hallé for a performance of a magnificent work that simply brims with great melodies, Dvorák’s Eighth Symphony. In the words of the great Czech conductor Vacláv Talich, the symphony “sings of the joy of green pastures, of summer evenings, of the melancholy of blue forests, of the defiant merry-making of Czech peasants.” The programme features two more Czech composers – Bedřich Smetana and Vítězslava Kaprálová. Vltava evokes the course of one of Bohemia’s great rivers whilst Suita Rustica, inspired by the folk songs and dances from the composer’s homeland, is filled with moments of innocent exuberance and exquisite lyricism. Sergio Castelló López, the Hallé’s Principal Clarinet, is soloist in Mozart’s serene concerto. Written for the hugely respected 18th century clarinettist Anton Stadler, Mozart tailored the work to exploit the musician’s virtuosity, celebrated singing tone and love of the instrument’s rich, lower register.
