Ravel - Rapsodie Espagnole
Debussy - Rhapsodie for Clarinet and Orchestra
Ravel - Bolero
Mussorgsky (arr. Ravel) - Pictures at an Exhibition
Conductor
Sir Mark Elder
Featuring:
Sergio Castelló López, Clarinet
Ravel’s Spanish-Basque heritage is heard to striking effect in the exotically charged Rapsodie Espagnole and in his orchestral showpiece Bolero, a work originally intended for performance by Ida Rubinstein’s ballet troupe in 1928. Debussy’s Rhapsody began life as a Conservatoire test piece for clarinet, while Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, originally for solo piano, was given new life by Ravel’s magnificent arrangement in which form it is better known.
