Tchaikovsky - Andante Cantabile for Cello and Strings
Tchaikovsky - Symphony No. 4
Jian Wang, Cello
After last season’s Viennese evening, the Hallé returns to Kendal with an all-Russian concert. Prokofiev’s Classical Symphony, with its jaunty Gavotte, imagines how Haydn might have written a symphony had he been alive in the early 20th century! Tchaikovsky’s decorative and brilliant Rococo cello variations are followed by his 4th symphony, in which the composer mulls over his disastrous marriage and attempted suicide of 1877. But in the music of the brilliant finale it seems that this troubled man has survived it all through his music – for the time being at least.
