Elgar - The Kingdom: Prelude
Sibelius - Symphony No.6
Saint-Saëns - Symphony No.3, ‘Organ’

Jonathon Heyward

Dr Colin Walsh, organ

The Hallé return to Lincoln Cathedral with the Prelude from one of Elgar’s greatest achievements: The Kingdom. Shot through with glowing passion and stately serenity, the composer’s final oratorio explores the lives of the disciples during the Church’s earliest days. Sibelius’s Sixth Symphony, quite unlike any of its composer’s other symphonies, is a more optimistic work. With no slow movement and nearly every section of the piece cheerfully paced, the work concludes by fading into peaceful oblivion. Dr Colin Walsh, Lincoln Cathedral’s Organist Laureate, then pulls out all the stops on the famous Father Willis Organ in Saint-Saëns’ impressive, fascinatingly-textured ‘Organ’ Symphony. Of composing the piece, Saint-Saëns wrote: ‘I gave everything to it that I was able to give.’
