Debussy - Marche écossaise sur un thème populaire
Tchaikovsky - Piano Concerto No.1
Stravinsky - The Firebird: complete (1910)

Sir Mark Elder

Alexander Gavrylyuk, Piano

To celebrate the 85th anniversary of Sheffield City Hall, Sir Mark Elder and the Hallé, for which the venue has long been something of a second home, open the season with this highly attractive programme. Russian music is a thread running through this season’s programme and tonight the virtuosic and thought-provoking Alexander Gavrylyuk plays Tchaikovsky’s beloved First Piano Concerto. Also beloved is Stravinsky’s melodious Firebird, tonight heard in its glorious entirety. This musical version of a Russian fairy tale begins in darkness but ends in great triumph and jubilation. The concert opens with Debussy’s high spirited and evocative tribute to Scotland, ‘March écossaise’.
