Sir Mark Elder

Actor from Manchester Metropolitan University School of Theatre

Master Elgarian Sir Mark Elder conducts the composer’s First Symphony. In December 1908 the Hallé gave its world premiere and ever since it has retained a special place in the orchestra’s repertoire and affections. Elgar said the work expressed “massive hope in the future.” The concert also features a much-anticipated new work by one of the leading lights of today’s British music scene, Huw Watkins. It will have received its world premiere in Manchester the night before. Then talented young actors from Manchester Metropolitan University School of Theatre narrate Britten’s educative and uplifting Young Person’s Guide, a magnificent tribute to the music of Henry Purcell. Ideal fare for young people of all ages, it makes for a rousing finale to a feast of English music.
