Delius - Paris: ‘The Song of a Great City’
Shostakovich - Cello Concerto No.1
Mussorgsky Orch. Ravel - Pictures at an Exhibition

Sir Mark Elder

Alisa Weilerstein, cello

Paris has always been a source of inspiration for musicians, among them Delius. Tonight provides a rare chance to hear the Bradford-born composer’s lyrical and fascinatingly-textured impression of the French capital. After the interval, a great Russian work gets French dressing in a performance of Ravel’s peerless orchestration of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. Inspired by the artworks of a friend, Mussorgsky superbly turned the visual into sound.

Shostakovich’s highly personal First Cello Concerto places ferocious technical demands on the soloist. Rest assured, the brilliant American cellist Alisa Weilerstein will more than rise to the challenge.
