Ryan Wigglesworth returns to conduct a concert of contrasts. Hadyn’s ‘Drum Roll’ is packed with the composer’s most beguiling melodies, turns of phrase and surprises, showing all the skill of a symphonist with over a hundred similar works to his credit! The choral masterpiece A Child of our Time was written early in World War II as a protest against “man’s inhumanity to man”. It’s emotional essence lies in the five spirituals which Tippett incorporated into the score, inspired by the chorales in J.S.Bach’s Passions. These unforgettable settings lend universal resonance to the suffering of oppressed people everywhere. Like the Haydn, however, this great work’s ultimate message is one of optimism.
