Vaughan Williams - Symphony No.6
Mozart - Piano Concerto No.23 K488
Sibelius - Symphony No.3
Sir Mark Elder
Elisabeth Brauss, piano
The Hallé and Sir Mark Elder continue their season-long celebration of the 150th anniversary of Ralph Vaughan Williams’s birth with a performance of his Symphony No.6, an extravagant and imaginative work. It ushered in a fruitful and expressive late period for Vaughan Williams, one of the greatest British composers of the 20th Century. Mozart’s Piano Concerto No.23 features rising pianist Elisabeth Brauss. She is the latest recipient of the prestigious Terence Judd Hallé Award, as well as being a BBC New Generation Artist. Sibelius is a composer embedded in the DNA of the Hallé, its players, conductors and audience, in a tradition that stretches back to Richter, continuing through Harty and Barbirolli to Sir Mark Elder today. Sibelius’s Third Symphony banishes all late-Romantic echoes of his first two symphonies creating a beautifully proportioned, concise and classically poised work.
